December Goal: The Progression Update

Friday marked the first missed update in my bi-weekly update schedule. This was in large part to me taking a week-long break to play through Yakuza 0 for a few reasons:

  1. It had been on my backlog for several years now, having owned it the whole time;
  2. I was stagnating in development; and more relevantly
  3. For research on Japanese urban/suburban streets as reference for when I start designing my own environments.

Having been able to step back a bit and re-organize my thoughts, I've re-aligned myself towards a longer term goal beyond bi-weekly releases. My original exit criteria for pre-alpha was to be published on Steam, which does little to propel the game's development as it barely describes the final game.

Roshutsu is currently in pre-alpha because there is a lack of progression; you set some parameters and play out an exhibitionism/ENF fantasy. It's good for a proof-of-conceptwhich is what a pre-alpha is meant to bebut it lacks the substance a game requires. I want to set some goals to better reflect the alpha version of the final game. Therefore I am changing the exit criteria for exiting pre-alpha:

  • The introduction of story mode. In this mode, there will be a progression system to unlock upgrades from doing runs to develop the protagonist from fantasizing about exhibitionism to becoming full-blown exhibitionist. This will include a new level that serves as her home, which will be used to purchase upgrades and outfits along with picking an area to streak in.
  • The new player character model should be playable in-game with a few outfit choices; at minimum, about what is available at present.
  • The design and implementation of a new level, which will be a more urban environment with narrow streets and alleyways to take cover in, along with more people to avoid and more unpredictability.

These goals are what I will be striving to develop in the next three months, with a target release in December. This update will be The Progression Update and will be the first release of Alpha 1.0.0. Roshutsu will continue to be available for free on itch.io, but a pick-your-price option will become available with the alpha release. I do plan on continuing bi-weekly releases, as there is still a fair amount of functionality to implement beyond progression. You can view some of these planned features on my Trello board, which I will continue to keep updating as I work on features.
